Don't Fret - Meditate

Meditation must have hired the PR firm that cauliflower and brussels sprouts use. After decades of being made to feel too “woo woo” and out of touch it is finally starting to get a better rep. I think so much of the turn off from meditation came from misunderstandings of the many ways one can utilize this practice. It feels impossible to “clear your mind”. Surprise! You don’t have to!
For beginners it’s best to think of meditation as simply slowing down and organizing your thoughts. When I was struggling with anxiety last year I started meditating for ten minutes each morning and evening and sometimes I’d take another ten midday. I would do my breath work and repeat a mantra or affirmation. I didn’t try to rid my mind of thoughts, that would have been an exhausting and frustrating chore. I did try to recount things I was grateful for and bring myself back in the present. Anxiety is often our thoughts and mind getting away from us. Taking a moment to breathe can make a big difference.
If you aren’t in the middle of the strain of anxiety, you can start to look at your thoughts as they pass by and slowly push them to the side each time. Sitting or laying somewhere quiet is key. Closing your eyes is also important. You can play ambient music (youtube has tons of options) to try to keep the background noise from being distracting. Watch your thoughts as they come in, slowly pushing each one to the side and allowing for the next to come in. Be sure you don’t dwell on a thought for long and you keep your breath regulated. This is a beautiful way to work towards growing your meditation practice.
Of course there’s a million ways to meditate, but these are how I’d suggest my client get started. Give it a try, I am certain you won’t regret it.
